    LARP and Religion

Monday, October 13, 2008, 04:23 PM PST [General]

So, I am currently working on an ethnography focused on LARPers and religion (both in and out of game.) Unfortunately, due to the scope of the project, I am focusing on Southern California LARPs, although at this time I haven't limited it to only one or another particular flavor of LARP.

I am seeking willing interview participants to discuss their personal views on religion, both in the real world and in LARPs. I have already received several offers from Eidolon players, but would like to also branch out to folks who have different play styles and different system experiences. Additionally, I have a particular interest in speaking with other local GMs about their perceptions of the SoCal LARP community's demand for religion (or lack thereof) in gmae, and how religion is or is not implemented in your game.

All interviews will be anonymous in the final ethnography, and will be made available to any participants of the LARP community upon request after completion (late December.)

Please contact me at molly@eidolonlarp.com or mtr02000@mymail.pomona.edu if you are interested in helping me with this. Thank you all very much for your consideration.

    Why are titles always required?

Thank you so much to Jesse Heinig, who I don't even think is on LARPSpace yet. (***EDIT***: I was wrong, and Jesse is indeed on LARPSpace. In fact, Eidolon folks who joined me last Sunday, everyone should go join the DK group here: http://www.larpspace.com/dyingkingdoms) I had a fantastic time at Dying Kingdoms this past weekend, and I can't wait to get you folks out to Eidolon. I'm not used to playing a mover and shaker type (considering the only other PC I've ever played has been a subordinate in a military squad and most of my Eidolon Cast roles are support) so it was a pleasant change. It's strange switching to different systems, though. I'm never sure how much interaction is actually happening, and how much of it is stuff that's in my head that I think is happening because I have an ingrained paranoia cultivated by Eidolon. Also, since I'm not terribly experienced playing PCs, but I'm usually seen at other LARPs as a representative of the Eidolon GM Staff, I tend to get really self-conscious about screwing up in some fashion (too meek, too forthright, too bossy, whatever.) So it's an interesting predicament, and definitely one that's forcing me out of my shell, but I'm hoping it will be good for me. If all else fails, I can always get an arisaid and a giant sword and join up with the Culberrans, I s'pose! ^_^
