Description: Mystic Realms Most entertainment (movies, books, television) makes you the observer of the action, but at Mystic Realms you are the action. While playing Mystic Realms you become the central character of your own heroic story. Mystic Realms provides a comprehensive rules system that allows anyone to create theatrical live-action roleplaying events with strong characterization and compelling plots. From groups of friends playing intense backyard events, to convention events with dozens of participants, to large scale clubs that host hundreds of players in rented facilities this book gives you the rules that allow play by any size group, in any time period and across all genres: fantasy, horror, steampunk, western, science fiction, and even modern, mundane earth. In Mystic Realms participants can explore a dynamic range of highly theatrical characters. They can become adventurers in a realm of magic and mythical creatures, mundane people investigating the paranormal, gun-toting cosmic troopers fighting aliens in the final frontier or even a super hero straight from the pages of a comic book. With hundreds of skills to chose from, every character is unique, and the possible characters and settings are only limited by the imagination. Theatrical live-action roleplaying encourages players to find a greater intellectual and emotion content in their roleplaying. A Mystic Realms experience is more than just a roleplaying game; instead the focus is on creating characters with "character," stories with evocative emotional content and settings with sufficient detail to allow participants to completely immerse themselves in an exciting, dramatic-focused story. The goal of participation is to suspend disbelief in such a way that the rules are internalized and players can experience truly living as their characters. The rules are designed to be non-intrusive, but still remain capable of supporting interactions that create magical, memorable moments of live-action roleplaying. Mystic Realms is a multidimensional hobby that empowers participants to explore all facets of the theatrical arts and themselves. By encouraging participants to develop real-life performance skills, such as improvisational acting, stage management, costume creation, prop making and script writing these rules create a level of character immersion and plot development not possible in traditional roleplaying. Participants learn social, dramatic, leadership and crafting skills which they use to bring their roleplaying events to the level of an interactive theatrical experience. Theatrical Roleplaying Mystic Realms events are intended to be intense dramatic presentations that blend character interactions with dramatic conflict to create a theatrical environment that evokes multidimensional excitement. With hearts pounding, thoughts racing and emotions whirling, these rules allow participants to suspend their disbelief in order to more fully portray their characters. This allows participant to have a greater investment in scenes, which creates a more profound experience overall. As you can imagine a theatrical roleplaying experience is as different from the general roleplaying game, as day is to night. Many roleplaying games only scratch the surface of character and story development, focusing instead on skill accumulation and combat interactions which merely create the base excitement of a combat altercation. Most roleplaying rules are premised on the apprehension of combat and the thrill of victory, but the Mystic Realms theatrical approach to rules goes one step further by providing a broad range of emotional and intellectual experiences. Mystic Realms not only resolves combat quickly, effectively and in real time without stop-action, but promotes non-combat interaction within the rules system to better develop characters. The unique rules drive character interaction on many levels by providing non-combat skills that promote social cooperation and group development, by designing skills that encourage players to "perform" for each other while using the skill, and by providing a means for characters to interact with terrain, vehicles, weather and many other interesting conditions. The worlds of Mystic Realms have detailed source materials that allow players to create characters with a real and immediate connection to the play setting. This allows the player to immediately connect to play and plot. Players attending events with a passing familiarity with the source materials for their realm of play, and an understanding of their character’s personal background will be directly involved with other characters from the moment the event starts. Mystic Realms uses a cast characters to help bring the world to life. Plots are written to create emotional responses in player characters and provide intellectual choices that are intended to cause verbal discourse as characters consider various options that cannot be solved with strike of a sword, with shot from a gun or with the casting of a magical spell. Lighting, music and other special effects are combined with roleplayed combat, improvisational acting and script writing to produce sweeping theatrical scenes. Live-Action! Mystic Realms Live-Action! allows participants to become their characters in a decorated play area that serves as the stage for interaction. Participants wear costumes and the rules facilitate continuous real-time interaction and combat. Participants do not have to pause or stop the action while playing. The characters in the show act as one would in real life. The rules use visual or verbal cues and physical activity to seamlessly resolve interactions. There is no need for dice or other methods, such as rock-paper-scissor, numbered cards or odds-evens, to resolve in-play tests, challenges or conflicts. Mystic Realms does not use an out-of–character referee or moderator. The rules encourage characters to remain in-play while in the play area. The rules define the world in which the event is set and allow characters to interact with each other and their surroundings without the need for an out-of-play moderator. This area can be as small as a basement or as large as a forest park and is often decorated to resemble the place in which the story is played. A basement can become a dank dungeon labyrinth with the stapling of a few tarps to the beams, while the park is easily transformed into a setting
